Series: Summer Stories Sermon: The Good Samaritan Speaker: Andrew Poston Scripture: Luke 10:25-39 Luke 10:25-39 ESV 25 And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” 27 And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” 28 And he said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.” 29 But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. 32 So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. 34 He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’ 36 Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?” 37 He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, “You go, and do likewise.”
Definition: Parables are stories that teach us a truth about the Kingdom of God.
Two-fold Purpose: -Reveal -Conceal
3 C method to reading and interpreting the parables: -The Context -The Common -The Clash
1. The Context v25-29
Matthew 22:37-40 ESV “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
QUOTE: Mike McKinley “He sought to do what everyone operating within a works-based religion must do - try to lower God’s standards down to a place where they can be cleared by means of human effort.”
Following the Rules does not make you justified.
2. The Common v30-32
Following the Rules does not make you loving.
3. The Clash v33-37
Luke 9:54 ESV Lord, do you want us to tell fire to come down from heaven and consume them?
Who is my neighbor? ---> How can I be a neighbor? What status of people are worthy of my love ---> How can I love other people regardless of status?
QUOTE: Jared Wilson “The parable of the Good Samaritan makes it abundantly clear that justification cannot come from ethnicity or religion or any other earthly badge of honor. By making the bad guy ‘good,’ Jesus shows us how any sinner is ripe for righteousness because the ground is level at the foot of the cross.”
Romans 3:23 ESV For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Luke 7:47 ESV But he who is forgiven little, loves little.
Love for your neighbor is not an obligation, but an indication.
QUOTE: John Piper “Loving God and loving neighbor is necessary to inherit eternal life not because it is a work of merit to earn life, but because it is a fruit of the Spirit that proves life is present.”
1 John 3:14 20 ESV “We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death. Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him;
Kingdom Principle: The love we show others flows from the love we’ve been shown.
HOW DO WE LIVE IN LIGHT OF THIS? -Do you have eyes that see? -Do you have a heart that cares? -Do you have hands that work?
James 2:15-17 ESV If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
